Qatar has reinforced its commitment to Lebanon’s sovereignty and economic recovery through expanded cooperation in energy and electricity projects. This development comes after a meeting between Qatar’s Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani, and Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam, where they discussed enhancing bilateral relations and addressing regional issues.
Sheikh Mohammed outlined Qatar’s intention to assist Lebanon across key sectors such as energy, education, healthcare, and economic development. He emphasized Doha’s ongoing support for the Lebanese Armed Forces in their efforts to maintain national security and stability. A significant outcome of the talks was an agreement between QatarEnergy and France’s TotalEnergies to develop a solar power plant, marking a step toward broader energy cooperation.
Additionally, Lebanon is advancing plans for a project to rehabilitate and modernize its electricity generation infrastructure under a build-operate-transfer model. This arrangement is designed to proceed without needing upfront investment from the Lebanese treasury, as highlighted by Prime Minister Salam.
Qatar expressed concerns about rising hostilities in Lebanon, condemning Israeli attacks on peacekeeping forces and violations of Lebanese territory. Sheikh Mohammed called for the implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701, an end to hostilities, and the withdrawal of Israeli forces from occupied areas in Lebanon.
Prime Minister Salam welcomed Qatar’s continued support, noting its contributions to reconstruction and the strengthening of Lebanese state institutions. He emphasized that cooperation in energy, electricity, and investment would bolster the economy, aid in reconstruction, and facilitate the return of displaced residents to their communities.
Qatar reiterated its commitment to collaborating with international partners to bolster Lebanon’s security and stability, supporting the country’s long-term recovery efforts.
