Qatar and France Expand Defence Collaboration with New Military Agreements

During discussions with Qatar’s Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, both leaders committed to enhancing bilateral ties across various sectors, including economic and cultural domains.

Defence collaboration was a central theme of the talks, as Qatar and France agreed to expand military cooperation. This includes joint training programs, enhancements in land-force capabilities, and air defence initiatives. A notable agreement was the signing of a letter of intent to involve KNDS France and John Cockerill Defense in modernizing Qatar’s land forces. The two nations also showed interest in furthering cooperation on Rafale fighter aircraft, radar systems, communications satellites, and military planning.

In addition to defence, Qatar and France emphasized the importance of counterterrorism efforts and cybersecurity, along with measures to curb illicit financial flows. Both countries highlighted protecting maritime navigation and reducing regional tensions through diplomatic efforts as priorities.

The partnership extends into economic cooperation, with both nations exploring investment opportunities in sectors such as energy, artificial intelligence, digital transformation, transport, infrastructure, healthcare, and tourism. They underlined the significance of energy security, technological innovation, and sustainable development in their economic agendas.

Regional security was also on the agenda, with discussions covering conflicts in Gaza, Lebanon, Syria, Sudan, Libya, and Yemen. Qatar and France expressed continued support for diplomatic solutions, humanitarian initiatives, and regional stability, maintaining their backing for a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Beyond defence and economic cooperation, the two countries are committed to expanding collaboration in education, research, culture, sports, and tourism. They also plan to work together on joint humanitarian and development projects, reinforcing their strategic relationship and mutual goals of international security and growth.
