In a gesture of solidarity and respect, Kiren Rijiju, India’s Minister of Parliamentary Affairs and Minority Affairs, traveled to Doha to extend condolences on behalf of India following the death of Qatar’s Father Amir, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani. This visit emphasized the enduring and robust ties that have long existed between India and Qatar.
During his time in Doha, Rijiju met with Qatar’s current Amir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani. He conveyed heartfelt condolences from the Indian government and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, acknowledging the significant impact the late Father Amir had on both Qatar’s development and the strengthening of diplomatic relations between the two nations.
Rijiju lauded Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani as a visionary who significantly contributed to fostering a strategic partnership with India. He also noted the deep sense of loss felt by the Indian community in Qatar, who hold the Father Amir in high regard for his numerous contributions.
Previously, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had expressed his sorrow over the passing of Sheikh Hamad, describing him as a true friend of India. Modi commended the Father Amir’s role in enhancing the bilateral relationship between the two countries, highlighting the deep respect and admiration shared by Indian leadership.
In homage to Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, India marked a day of national mourning on July 13, 2026. As part of this observance, the national flag was flown at half-mast on all government buildings, and official entertainment was put on hold. This act of mourning underscores the deep diplomatic connections between India and Qatar, reflecting the importance both nations place on their longstanding partnership.
