Green Pea Hummus: Boosting Market Demand for Protein-Rich, Versatile Foods

Green pea hummus offers a delightful way to enhance your meals with added protein and fiber. This homemade blend combines boiled chickpeas and green peas with a mix of herbs, spices, and healthy fats. With each serving providing approximately 12–13 grams of protein, it also enriches your diet with fiber, vitamins, and minerals. Its smooth, creamy consistency makes it a versatile alternative to traditional condiments like ketchup or mayonnaise, perfect for pairing with a variety of dishes such as wraps, sandwiches, dosa, and paratha.

The recipe for green pea hummus is straightforward, requiring just a few ingredients. You’ll need one cup of boiled chickpeas and one cup of steamed green peas. To this, add a tablespoon of sesame seeds, a handful each of coriander and mint leaves, one or two green chillies, a garlic clove, and half a teaspoon of cumin powder. Season with salt and the juice of half a lemon. Finish off with a tablespoon of olive oil and a couple of ice cubes for smooth blending.

To prepare, start by steaming the green peas for about seven to eight minutes until tender. Next, blend the steamed peas with the boiled chickpeas, coriander, mint, sesame seeds, green chilies, garlic, cumin powder, salt, lemon juice, olive oil, and ice cubes until you achieve a smooth, creamy texture. If the consistency is too thick, add a bit of water and blend again. Once ready, transfer the hummus to a serving bowl, drizzle with olive oil, and garnish with red chili powder, pomegranate seeds, or some whole chickpeas for an extra touch.

This hummus can be enjoyed as a spread or dip, complementing your regular meals beautifully. It works wonderfully in sandwiches, wraps, frankies, dosa, and parathas, or simply as a dip for fresh vegetables. A simple way to make everyday food more nutritious, this recipe does not impose the feeling of a restrictive “healthy meal.” Though green peas alone are not a complete protein source due to their lower content of some essential amino acids, they can contribute to a balanced diet when combined with other protein-rich foods.
