Filmmaker Ali Asgari presented his dramedy Divine Comedy at the Doha Film Festival, where the film had its MENA premiere. The story follows a 40-year-old Iranian director navigating the challenges of releasing a film in his home country, blending real-life inspiration with a comedic approach.
Asgari explained that the film was shot in a raw, realistic style, using real locations and everyday people instead of extras. He described the project as deeply personal, though not autobiographical, with several scenes drawn from true experiences. Producer Milad Khosravi added that most of the film’s funding came from private co-producers who supported the creative vision rather than commercial gain.
Actors Sadaf Asgari and Bahram Ark both spoke about their close collaboration with the director. Sadaf highlighted her strong respect for Asgari’s guidance, while Ark — initially hesitant to act — agreed to take the lead role after Asgari insisted he was essential to the film. The cast recalled a lively and positive 10-day shoot.
The film’s screening reflects the Doha Film Institute’s ongoing commitment to supporting regional voices and showcasing bold, authentic stories from the Middle East.
