President Donald Trump and President Xi Jinping will hold high-stakes talks in South Korea this Thursday, as trade tensions between their nations have spiked anew.
Speaking from Tokyo, Trump was optimistic, calling it a “big meeting” and saying, “I think it’s going to work out very well.” The meeting will be held during the APEC summit.
The tensions spiked after a period of calm. China imposed export controls on rare earths, and the US responded with a threat of 100% tariffs starting November 1.
The conflict has also seen new US port fees on Chinese ships, which sparked a wave of retaliatory measures from China.
Despite this, Trump called the upcoming meeting “fantastic” and “great for everybody,” suggesting he is aiming for a resolution.
